Sagbama Local Government Council, located in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, has a rich history spanning over four decades. Created in 1977, the council has been led by numerous chairmen who have played a crucial role in shaping its development.
The council's maiden chairman was Late Chief FurukamaBomor JP, who laid the foundation for its growth. Subsequent chairmen, including Mr. E.M Okubotin, Mr. Brazil B. Ndiomu, and Late Chief Aseyai Etifa, continued to build on this foundation.
In 1996, Bayelsa State was created, and Sagbama Local Government Council became an integral part of it. Since then, the council has been led by various chairmen, elected and appointed including Late Chief JK Brambaifa, Late Mr. Augustine M. Eneghan, and Late Thomas T. Iti. Mr. E.D Ogolo, Late Chief F.E Bribena Amb. Felix Oboro, Dr. Ebiokubo Empire, Mr. Joseph Toun-aregha, Mr. Christopher Enai HRM Seiyefa Koroye, late Mr. Robinson College Accrah, late Mr. Abeinzi Dougha, Mr. Vincent Egbuson, Chief Ebikiri Akpolo, late HRM J.I Igbagara, Barr. Presentation of food items to the people to mitigate their suffering, presentation of wrappers to women of the local government and a lot of other beneficial programmes, projects and policies.
Today, Sagbama Local Government Council is one of the eight local government areas in Bayelsa State, covering an area of 945 km² and with a population of 187,146, according to the 2006 census.¹ The council continues to play a vital role in the development of Bayelsa State, with its chairmen working tirelessly to improve the lives of his people in-line with their avowed duties and responsibilities which include overseeing the day-to-day administration of the council, ensuring smooth and efficient operation, providing leadership and direction to the Local Government Council, policy formulation and implementation, financial management, community development and social services, collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies to maintain law and order within the council area, ensuring public safety and responding to emergencies and disasters, representing the council at official functions such as meetings and events both within and outside the council, liaising between the local government and other tiers of governments etc.
